Eulogy to Master Niranjan

"Bachcha intellizant hai!"

"Aap report card pe mat jaiye. Aapka beta intellizant hai. Lekin bahut dheet hai. Homework nahi karta hai, book nahi lata hai, class mein baat karta rahta hai, undisciplined bachcha hai. Lekin koi baat nahi abhi to umar hai, sudhar jayega. Hai na, niranjan? Sudhar jaoge na?"

Undoubtedly, my most carefree days of adventuring as a 10yr old were undone with depressing regularity by parent teacher meetings. "Bolo niranjan, sudhar jaoge na?" Goddamit, why do teachers expect answers for rhetorical questions. The idea that the questions are the message in themse... "Owww!!"

"Answer the teacher, Niranjannnn!!" growls my dad as he pinches my leg under the table.

"Yes Maam. I mean, sorry, yes sir!!"

The class bursts out laughing. I don't know why at that age all the guys seem to laugh with you, and the girls seem to laugh at you. I hate the girls in my class... well maybe not all of them, there is one...
"Tu hai na, sudharega nahi, hain?? Mein yahan khada chutterbutter kar raha hoon, tu sapne dekh beta. Abhi bula lenge tujhe tere band baje wale, bhaag liyo tu. Sudharega nahi, hain?? Pata hai IIT mein kitna hota hai ye sab, ye band baja waja. Abhi kar le thodi padhai, hain? IIT pahunchja, hain, fir kariyo, jo karna hai.

I thought school without history, geography, hindi, and bloody CIVICS would be awesome. Turns out it isnt. Not even school without chemistry and biology and everything else, just physics. Nope. You have to wait till school has no subjects at all. In fact everything about school is awesome except the schooling. "Book laya aaj chemistry ki, hain? Sudharega nahi, hain? Pata hai na book nahi to attendance nahi... " Schools make people hate books, quite literally making ignorant. Ironic.
I have an easy solution. Make e-classes mandatory, classes through skype and facebook and twitter. All the idiots will think this is a great idea and wont resist, but soon they will in turn start hating twitter by association and liking books by comparison, and eventually wont be idiots anymore.

"I'm marking you absent."
...
"There is nothing to say really. Your attendance is 74%, and you need 80% to pass. Those are the rules. It doesn't matter that you passed the exam, you still get a fail grade. I could change the grade, but then, quite frankly, why should I??"

I wonder how hard it could be to be a professor at a place like IIT. Once the young and the brightest minds of the country, each converging here for their own reasons, some with a zest for research, some yearning to mould the future, some simply paying homage to their alma mater, each with their own motive, their own defining, and largely accomplished, goals in life, filling that yet other bunch with envious contempt, those others, for whom this was simply the best career choice available.
Those others, ones who bet against the Silicon Valley and the internet boom, the ones who missed the Biotech bandwagon, ones too old or just too tired to catch the Nanotech train. Perhaps a million dollars is a reasonable goal, or a Nobel Prize, or perhaps simply, not having to eke a paper out of half a grant, or at the very least, having the respect, or even just the attention of 30 juvenile self-absorbed smartasses. Its easy to be the juvenile self absorbed ass. Its probably not so bad for the first bunch either. Its definitely much harder to be the bad teacher.
Thankfully, if you could remember what the bad teachers told you, they wouldn't be so bad now would they?

"I know its harsh, but the rules exist for a reason. They could be wrong, which itself is debatable, but surely you may question them, and indeed it is such questions that will force the evolution of the system, but in the end, you are but a speck of dust in the machine. Sure you might be able to change the system, but then again, you might not. The question is, are you sure enough of your cause to put your would-be career on the line? True, this exam might not measure your research aptitude most accurately, but if you cannot handle a simple written test, you are not cut out for research. Nature, and Science, are way more cruel than any of our faculty. And I'm not just talking about the journals."

I hate it when people with authority are right, worse when they call your bluff. Even worse when I find their nerd jokes funny. Bosses should always be wrong. Only then, when the student becomes the master, he wont feel bad for having bested his mentor. So the really astute master, employs a bunch of 'management' as the student's immediate boss or supervisor. So while the student learns from the true master, he will never best him, instead always finding another manager to compete with.

After 20 years of schooling, most of which involved me chasing the fantastical dream world, where there was no exams, no classes, and no homework, where competition was for competition sake, and not to gain admission in a university, where knowledge was sought for knowledge sake, and not for an exam, where I was not required to punch in attendance, nor maintain a pretentious decorum, nor not listen to heavy metal while working... after 20 years of schooling and having finally made it to the other side, I still think...

School... was awesome.
But... no school is awesomer.

Am I in the perfect world I dreamed of??
Well no... but its close enough for now.

Is that why I wont get a 'real' job??
Sure... anything to rationalize being lazy.

A Reluctant Academic

Well I have justified the title of this blog more than adequately.
Four years in IIT, the best institute for science and engineering in the country, attracting the greatest minds in India, have come to an end.
Four years of endless opportunities to launch my academic career.

What did I do with all those opportunities, lets see :

How many papers have I published - 0.
How many articles have I written for review journals or magazines - 0.
How many research projects have I done which weren't compulsory for my graduation - 0.
How many recommendations can I count on for applications - 1.

So what did I do in 4 years?? Lets see :

Sing in a band and "almost" release an album - check.
Organize Asia's biggest college cultural festival - check.
Start and write for India's "premier" humour Website - check.

So now I'm off to 5 more years of academia, a post graduation and doctorate in Virginia in the US of A.
No prizes for guessing what I'l not be doing over there...

Reminiscing - the gone, the old and the fuzzy

Thought I'd have a bath today... long have I foreseen the day of the Bath. Let it be today.
Open my cupboard. A big bag. ABSOLUT. JAMESON. Shout out to me.
Stop.

Think for a moment.

Reminisce.

Mood Indigo 2005.
The greatest festival on Earth.
The single best week of my life.
Not THE beginning... but certainly A beginning. (cant you tell that line is stolen... I aint that good)
Have you ever felt like you're not really sure whether you are awake.... or still dreaming? (Steal my words, I deserve it.)
Is not knowing what to say the same as not knowing? (Put me in jail for Grand Theft Auto...)
If you dont remember the past... how is it any different from a dream?

Pieces of a memory... strung like beads, rather like newspaper clippings of a long gone serial killer's excursions... You know he is real and only human, but behind the wall of time n fading memories, perforated by the peepholes of evanescent public interest, he becomes a legend. Moving through shadow, a wisp... the Shadow himself, incarnate, invincible.

Pieces of a memory. Like the ragged beggar who just refuses to die... Till you begin to wish he wouldnt ever. So that when he does die, he will be resurrected in your memory as the hero. The martyr. The Light himself, incarnate, doomed to bear your sins.

Pieces of a memory. The smaller the holes, the more glorious the view. The less you can see... the more you can imagine.

Slam down the phone... Dude! Fuck Shaan, Lets drink!
Have a small leaky plastic glass of beer... and please dont puke in public.
Dude, what the fuck are we doin in the girls hostel? The girls dont care, what the fuck's your problem?
Dude, isn't this the first time you had a drink? No man, this is the first time I ever had a drink.
Sugar gets you high... so does a C10 and RS. And I aint responsible for I might do tonight.

And remember people, smoking is injurious to health.

Pieces of a memory. The holes are small enough.
Mood Indigo 2005.
The greatest festival on Earth.
The single best week of my life.
Not THE beginning... but certainly A beginning.

I think I have heard all this before. Am I awake...or still dreaming?
Goodnight.

I come to mock caesar, not to praise him..!!!

Valfi season in IIT again....
for the uninitiated valfi is iitian for Valedictory Function....where we celebrate the graduation (or what should have been their ideal graduation time) of a few painu seniors and wish them the senti farewell they feel they deserve....
Honestly I dont know of any other custom that is more meaningful and profound yet as fun and lukha as this one....
I mean the endsems are like a week away and we are dwelling on prehistoric exploits of person after person for nights on end....the 4th years apparently have no interest in their last exam in iit but seemingly a lot of sophies n thirdies dont mind the endsems either...

But the valfies are more than just a party, more than just food and drink, most than even teary farewells sometimes....
For a lot of btechs their graduation is their confessional....minus the religious apparatus.you are surrounded by all those people who have been like your family for the past 3 or 4 years and a lot of acquaintances and many you have never known in your life....and yet there it is...your life, your interests, your quirks, your peeves, your despogiri everything deconstructed and documented by your closest few.... and save for a few spoilsports,in the end its all a big laugh. If you have to part i couldnt have thought of a better parting thought, than to make someone lay themselves bare and make them feel good about it.In fact just the act of letting your true feelings be known to an anonymous crowd is such a incredibly powerful experience.

Im still only a sophie....but I think....that a valfi can leave you happy to be alive, and glad to be you.Glad that even the stupidest little things you did made a lot of people laugh today....and that you will be remembered....

Dumb thing to say but i await my valfi with rabid anticipation....I only hope i make a lot of people happy....and/or some people very very happy.... :)

Too Much Thinking For Today...

My my...look what the world is coming to....

IIT.....Indian Institute Of Technology......
the best brains in the world.....under one roof....
every indian students dream.....
the best proffessors at the forefront of indian science,
heralders of the new information age,one that screams out for oriental supremacy......

IIT.....Im a lucky guy...(a little smart too....:)
BUT

but just like the american dream.....one day......the myth was exposed for what it really was.
One can feel loud and clear and persistent the after shocks of the impact.
Another IITian committed suicide.
The details are unnecessary.Im not selling news.
Everyone claims to know the reason, everyone has a snip at the news column.Noone truly knows.I dont either.Im just a little afraid. Not scared, wary would be more accurate. What in the world could drive a man to suicide. Here in this intellectual paradise, where you have so much ,so much at your disposal when you are in here, and international repute when you are out of it?
I dont know.....

Suicide....makes you wonder.....
Iv considered suicide.....not anytime recently though...but always brushed it aside with ridicule...
I mean .... I was born for a reason right...??
The Matrix - "The purpose of life is to end" says Smith.
Is it??
What a waste.....But Is it?
What is the purpose of life.....Iv read about it,thought about it,talked about it....in vain...i need the answer...what is the purpose of life??

The suicide made me think of it afresh....maybe thats the right way to approach the question. Why suicide? Why end life? When you know there is no chance of rethink,retake,return...why take that risk...?where is the hope....
Hope....the quintessential human delusion simultaneously the sourec of our greatest strength and our greatest weakness.i quote the architect.
How can a man who is envied by so many, millions even, give up hope....?

Think of the worst that could happen to you...THE ABSOLUTE WORST...!!
What could possibly happen....

you lost the bet?
you lost your money?
you lost your job?
your wife/gf ran away with arnold schwarznegger?
you became schizophrenic?
your love betrayed you?
your judgements erred out of control?
you lost all control of your life?

your dog died?
your health died?
your trust died?
your faith died?
your friend died?
your love died?
your sanity died?

You.....died ?

I'm still looking for the answer....who here can honestly say he isn't??

An Interesting Day!!!

a new day....a new start....a new beginning.....a new life.....
the young and hopeless dream every other song on the radio speaks of....

same alarm on the same phone that i cant hear......every morning.....
bunked my first lecture .......just like every other day....

the same apathy towards education...the same reluctance of submitting to it.....the same resignation following the familiar realisation of the futility of the resistance.....

the same drawl in my step....the same sluggish gait.

the same senior who i thinks i got drunk last night too.......the same condescending glares....

the same foul fowl that fouls the bowl everyday....

the same slow trudge to class....

the same slap on the same wrist by the same misguided proffessor......dont they ever learn....

the same smirks by the same guys.....the same giggles by the same females, provoking my favourite response......nothing.

same psychopathic prof on a pedantic self prophecised campaign to impart meaningless education to scores of uninterested and incompetent students ......

I DONT BELONG HERE................

same faded mossy blight on the same wall that interests me more......a revolting sight.....just like it was yesterday.....except......wait....its not there.

something changed....this class isnt familiar anymore....the clock too slow...my mind too fast...my life too short...my vision too blurry....the voices too loud....and everyone too quiet....the people too inert...the shadows too furtive....the eyes too piercing...the glances too fleeting....
something's wrong......the truman show.....no.....
my life is not a movie...movie.....i shud do that....watch a movie.

i need my room...my recluse....my retreat...my room.

i need my music....my nectar...my elixir...my blood....my mind....my music.

i need my blog ...my distract...my decoy from life....my alternate reality...my illusion...my blog.

aaaaaaaahhhh!!!!!!peace.

A Day In The Life Of.......Me.
