Games aren't Just for Playing!

I wrote a post a few months ago about gaming. The post got deleted due to the blogger app being a bitch. I couldn't retrieve the post so I rewrote the post completely anew and here it is again. I chose to post it today, a few hours before the group stages for the Season 4 League of Legends World Championships kick off. The Season 3 Final, held in Staples Center LA, was watched by 32 million people worldwide. If you are not watching yet, you are at the right place, read this post then go watch/play some games.

I have always been big on video-games and, with the recent explosion of e-sports, extremely excited for the future of gaming. E-sports, for the noobs, is just electronic sports i.e competitive gaming. As a concept, e-sports has been big in Asia for a while. (I use Asia in the American geographical sense, meaning it only includes south-east Asia, China, Korea and so on. Russia is part of Europe. India does not exist.) In the recent past, e-sports has exploded in the US. Of course it has always existed, but never on a scale anywhere near what it is now. The advent of live streaming has been just the perfect catalyst to bring what was already a culture of passionate, if disorganized, competition, mainstream. There's a long way to go but at least e-sports has arrived.
League of Legends All Star event in Paris, e-sports are the real deal, believe it.
This in itself is something I would generally write about. I don't see myself writing about how professional gamers now earn regular salaries and have seasons, playoffs and world championships. Or how pro gaming events have everything from huge corporate sponsorship to millions of viewers watching live to millions of dollars in prize money. Or how both Sony and Microsoft are catching on fast and the next incarnation of both their consoles and have built in live streaming support. Or how the US govt recently granted League of Legends Championship Series' international players the same visa status that international sports players are accorded. And now everyone knows Twitch, the game streaming service recently acquired by Amazon for $1 billion. No... these are details, facts that I will leave to news portals or someone more entrenched in the actual e-sports scene. If you have been to this blog before, you know you are not here to read facts. Or news. No, what you expect to see here is a philosophical argument why something is as it is, and my opinion on what it should be. Well... I shall not disappoint.

Too many people I know consider video games a childish pursuit. This would not upset me if they simply did not like games, maybe they are just different, don't like the same things I do. It is when they are fervent advocates, and proselytize that gaming is bad for you that I take exception.

So tell me, you who deplore video games, what is your preferred medium for entertainment or education?

If you answered, watch TV or read a book

Sure TV and books are entertaining, but they are passive, not active, entertainment. Information -educational or recreational - flows through TV and books unidirectionally from the author to you, there is no participation required from you. Of course, there are merits to this method, books and movies have taken us to wonderful lands, real or imagined, beyond what we could ever experience first hand. We can travel distant planets and depths of the ocean from the comfort of our room. Yet we are always reminded that in the end, it is a story borne out of a creative mind, and you are welcomed to see the world as he paints it. The greatest author, or actor/director is one who can make you believe the experience is as personal to the reader/listener/viewer as to himself. Yet try as you might, in the end, the product is the experience of the creator and not the audience.

Another more important limitation is the lack of ability to communicate in more ways than one. Books and audio/video are a two person interaction, from the author to the audience. The author usually has a vision he wants to convey and the audience can interpret it only so freely. The connection the audience can share with the art form is limited by the authors vision. Many audience members may also associate the art with other audience members, for example the romantic song you share with your partner, the book your brother made you read, the movie that only your inner circle of friends know about. Yet, the art form itself limits its own meaning, the meaning that was given to it by its creator. It would hard (not impossible) to share a special love song with your brother, or a book about endless suffering with your lover. In the end the inability of the media to be as multi-dimensional as humans subtly encourages the audience to limit their own range based on the art or education they identify the most with.

If you answered, play games and sports

Games have been played by people for centuries. A good game can transcend age, race, language and interests. Every person sees a game as a different object, some see a puzzle to be solved, some see a challenge to be conquered, others see an opportunity to learn while others might just enjoy the company of others. The same game can be all of those things to different people. A game can be educational and entertaining, competitive and cooperative, fantastic and strategic. Most importantly a game is experiential, not instructional, active, not passive. You learn by doing, not seeing. In the end, books and TV might be great media to explore the inside of an atom or outer space, but they can never describe the experience of say, sky diving or simply the thrill of competition, better than the visceral experience itself.
Mancala (in Africa) or Pallankuzhi (in South India) is one of the oldest games known to man, over 3000 yrs old.
Yet, the games and sports we play today, represent a old world that we are fast outpacing as a society. The Olympic sports were invented at a time when physical fitness was the most important factor in deciding the worth of a man. This is why all the sports we know gear us towards better physical fitness since that is assumed to be a worthy ideal. As a result they are limited by what our bodies can do. A hundred years ago, that was enough. However, the industrial age and now the information has shown us, that amazing as our bodies are, our minds are far, far superior.

A sport creates an artificial arena with a few rules and gives the players the freedom to create an experience they like. The same game can be played in an ultra competitive manner with championship rivals, or a casual friendly way with friends. It can be played without even keeping score, just for the camaraderie. If a guy loves football, he can watch professional championships, play with friends competitively and also coach his son; his love for the sport can transcends individual experiences like books and movies rarely can (its possible, but uncommon). If physical sports whose design is so severely restricted by our physical abilities are still so versatile, imagine how far sports for the mind could transcend these limitations.

Hence electronic games (which for historical reasons are still called video games). A video game can be a book, movie, song and sport at the same time, and be so much more. As a form of art it can have all the elements of a creative author, communicating a vision to the player, and still leave plenty of room for the player to create his own unique experience. As a sport it can have all the teamwork, competition, focus and strategy elements that build character.

Minecraft satisfies the basic criteria for a game, an artificial world built with a fixed set of rules with the added freedom of being able to choose the goal. And the ability to compete or cooperate with not just a few people around you, but anyone around the world, as many as you want. You could play alone or with a 5 yr old or 50 yr old (a tech savvy grandma perhaps) or with a whole group and the experience would be unique every time.
Minecraft has been a remarkable proof of principle of  the educational and entertainment powerhouse a video game can be.
Video games can revolutionize the education and art industries if they let it. However the stigma and inertia in these arenas is strong. There exists a strong entrenched disdain for video games as a legitimate medium. Historically gamers were the losers of society, who were not cool enough to be social and not smart enough to do something worthwhile when alone. Video games of a previous generation were mostly just single player reflex tests, one dimensional puzzles at best, barring a few gems. This historic origin of video games in the entertainment industry is however purely incidental and very unfortunate. The development of video games, like in all entertainment, was towards making flashier and more addictive games that encouraged players to spend money and time on it purely for entertainment. The stigma of being a time wasting enterprise for losers still holds it back to this day.

But more and more people are now seeing the light. We see self confessed gamers becoming successful by other more mainstream metrics. With many tech millionaires and entertainers "coming out" as avid gamers, the average person can no longer claim that gaming is not for successful people, smart or sexy. It had to happen eventually because the stigma is ultimately unfounded; games are only harmful in excess, just like everything else. With gaming being more and more acceptable, new forms of gaming are evolving.

Amazing single player games which are some of best, most fun and challenging puzzles ever made by man. (Portal, Antichamber, NoTPron, Crimson Room come to mind, there are too many I can't remember right now)

Great multiplayer games you can play with teams of friends, requiring fantastic team play and intricate strategy. (League of Legends, DOTA, Age of Empires are some of my favorites)

Fascinating single player games which are incredible stories, rivaling books and movies in content. (Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, and of course Warcraft)

Massively Multiplayer games, which have no analogs in the history of man, since no story or experience has ever been created collectively by millions of authors. (WoW, Destiny, Life itself :P)
Age of Empires - my first foray into team gaming. Infi paladins conquer all.
While these are mostly entertainment, gaming is being applied in other areas such as education and research such as -
Fold it - A puzzle game where you have to disentangle proteins, millions of people play it recreationally, exercising their brains while actually helping solve problems in medical research.
Minecraft - An open world game which are so versatile that they have been used everywhere from education to art and still new ideas are being generated everyday. e.g Here is an great minecraft mod to help introduce kids to Quantum physics.

It is true that games for entertainment dominate the zeitgeist than any other, but as I said, that is purely due to historical accident. Facebook games and apps have set the game industry back a little, perpetuating the stereotype of stupid, addictive games. But it had to be from the entertainment industry that gaming had to break out into the mainstream consciousness. Given its birth in entertainment, games can only conquer the rest of the world once they are taken seriously at home. E-sports has been just that. Gaming is now a spectator sport with millions of people watching professional gamers in competitive tournaments. With Amazon buying Twitch, I expect investment in the gaming sector to explode.

But my expectation from the future of gaming is more than just entertainment. Today when books or movies are created, an accompanying video game is usually made for the relatively small section of the audience who also play games. With advances in technology and acceptance of games as as an art form, I expect the video game to completely absorb and transcend the movie and book experience. Imagine if you could play the entire story rather than just see or read it. If you were feeling lazy or in a hurry, put it on autoplay, and it becomes a movie. Turn off audio and video and it becomes a book.

In truth, I expect video games to become the mainstream form of entertainment, the next generation of art, requiring graphic artists, thespians, musicians and writers, with books and movies being the add on media lacking that ultimate user experience of creative freedom.

I imagine virtual reality to be able to give us a taste of what it feels like to fly like an eagle and swim with the whales, travel to the stars and expand the horizons of the every person.

I expect neuro-eletronic games to allow us to visualize and create what we cannot even put in words and tell us what our dreams mean.

I expect video games to make collaborative classrooms where kids (and adults) across the globe can play together.

I want video games to show us that a million minds can create much more than silly viral videos, and unlock whole new paradigms for emergent creativity.

I want to see things that I cannot even predict because my imagination is limited by my past experiences.

What makes me the happiest, and fills my heart with optimism for the future, is that, for once, progress does not require a revolution. Everyday whether you know it or not, one more thing in your life is turned into a game, from the way you exercise (Nike+) to your kids educational modules. If you do not like games, you will soon be in the minority. Soon you will be an old person, who will rue the old days when education used to be boring and work was monotonous like it was supposed to be. When experienced could only be narrated not shared, and worlds could only be imagined not felt. The future is bright for gaming and it is only a matter of time before gaming sheds its stifling entertainment mold and becomes integral to every part of our life. It does make me sad that India is not a leader, not even a follower in this field, but I guess I shouldn't complain too much.

As aptly put by Twitch, "Games aren't just for playing".

Dark Dream...

Looks can be deceiving...

A simple farm boy from tiny village... who knew what I would one day become.
Who knew my hunger would control my destiny...

My whole life is a blur... just yesterday it would seem, I was a soldier... fighting for my country...
Bullets like hellish rain... mortars crash like thunder, ironically, never in the same place twice...

A whole platoon... my men, my trusted men, men who would live and die at my command... blown to bits as the bunker collapsed on top of them... and me.
34 days... under the rubble.
34 days... with only my dead platoon for company.
34 days... without food or water.
Well... not entirely without food... my men, my trusted men, dead men... they kept me alive till the very end.

Focus now.
See through your target... look inside, see what 'she' is made of.
You would expect someone who does what I do for a living, to detach himself from his prey. Treat them like objects, a nameless mission. I don't... I always humanize my target, identify with her, love her, lust for her...
Its what amplifies the fun, the fun is in the chase, as they say. It makes her taste better. Unusual I know, but then so is my profession.
Watch her closely, and know what to expect. She knows what coming, and she is getting prepared. Watch her every step, every move, every stir... she can surprise you, but never let her baffle you.

I am back in the proverbial 'real world'.
Inducted with honor into a society that would be horrified if they knew all that I had done, all that I had seen.
I am not a patriot anymore... I am a monster now. A glutton for something much darker than food.

Don't judge me!! I am but a product of this society. A society of pretenses and excesses, where the most to gain from a commodity are the ones who decide its value, not the ones who create it. And it makes me mad... makes me want to feed off the rich and pretentious... laugh at their dead bored eyes as I feast on their fat...

I have no skill to create.. and I have no urge to learn. I am a fire, I can only consume.
And I am addicted. 34 nights in a bunker, eating the only thing available... Now I know no other food... I know no other feeling... except...

The decadent rush of devouring the most sinful food possible...
The vision of my mouth drenched dark as it would with wine, splashed across my face... yes I like to 'drink' when i feed
The guilt... that tortures me every night in memory of what I did... and the knowledge, that the only way to escape this guilt even for a little while, is to do it again.

Oh God.. stop.

Focus. You have her in your sights now. Sneak up behind her, close... closer.
Take a deep breath, feel her presence, inhale her essence, admire her, conquer her, but always respect her.
She knows what's coming, just not when. She is waiting, all dressed up and ready, for you.
Now, devour her.

"Mademoiselle...
She i... ahem... the dark chocolate souffle is delicious, a work of art indeed. The hint of vanilla, very nice touch. And oh, the raisins... please have a dozen crates sent to my home for further analysis."

Ah, my men, my trusted men... and the boxes of assorted chocolate protein bars they sneaked in.
Who would have thought my taste buds would be so refined?
A simple farm boy from tiny village... who knew that I would one day become... a chocolate taster.

Looks can be deceiving...

Sachin Tendulkar Must Die...

... a hero.

No, I don't hate Sachin. Agreed, I'v never been a crazy fan, but that was more because of how silly the game of cricket is rather than the man himself. So read the full heading, Sachin Tendulkar must die... a hero.

Sachin is awesome. Very awesome. Agreed?
Some would say, too awesome. Agreed?
I agree.
Who else do we have? We... yes, I mean we Indians. Who else have we got to idolize, to worship, to look up to...
No one.

Once upon a time, there was a kook called Bejan Daruwala. Every year this fruit predicts that India will become a global superpower. I guess he figures it is worth being wrong every year for 50 years straight than to miss the one year when it does happen... I admit that does make good business sense. But India will never be a superpower. Atleast not yet. Because we are too sensible... way too sensible.

More Indians of that generation are likely to point out a slight criticism of Mahatma Gandhi, that he allowed the partition to happen, than are Americans to point out a flaw in one of their shining gems of a role model, Saint Kurt Cobain. Now that might be because there 4 Indians for every Americans, but that's not the point I'm trying to make. Whether the partition was his error in judgment is irrelevant, if an overrated suicidal crack head can be an inspiration to people, uniting the most diverse country in the world to overthrow the greatest empire in the world without firing a single shot, should have made Gandhi untouchable. But it did not.
It only got him killed.

Why is America the most powerful nation in the world today? Right after its independence, US tried desperately to be the cool new kid on the block. But it took them a hundred years to figure out the formula, when they entered their so-called 'Age of Heroes'.
1 part blind nationalism, 1 part surreal hero worship, sprinkle in some astute publicity and mix in a  pool of corn-n-beef meathead populace and stir for a few decades... how do you like your heroes? They took their rag-tag but (usually) good hearted bunch of leaders, buried their flaws six feet under and publicized the holy fucking crap out of their achievements. Rockstars, astronauts, sportsmen, presidents, moviestars, businessmen, scientists... everyone could be a hero. And everyone was.
The century of Einsteins and Elvises, of Jordans and Jacksons, of Neil Armstrong and Pam Anderson.
And you know what is the one thing common that all these heroes could do. Make more heroes.
And the new heroes were for real... inspired self-made heroes. Heroes that perhaps stood on shaky shoulders but through their eyes mankind saw what it was capable of accomplishing, if only for just a short  tumultuous century.

America is past its Age of Heroes. Their inspiration died with the Cold war, the remnants of the zeal of the great Age butchered and divided up by giant corporations who have now collectively reduced the American dream to Wall Street job and celebrity magazines. And this veiled hive of commercialization now threaten to wage their sponsored war on the world from their product placed boardrooms using their billboard tanks and logo army suits. War Inc., watch it, very cool movie, Imdb ratings notwithstanding.

But I don't give a shit about America. India... yes, back to India. Post Independence there was no cause no reason to be a hero anymore. Aimless we wander through our lives much like Americans, dissecting every candidate of heroism with such crushing ruthlessness that, one mistake, one misstep, one falter, brings on the modern day witchhunt... you can't judge an artist by his personality but you do anyway. Every upright politician, every talented artist, every beautiful person, crushed under the weight of a billion judgmental eyes.

Like Sachin. Surely you remember when you abused and criticized and decried Sachin every time he got out at 90+ scores, or failed to convert his century into a  team victory.
Remember? Of course you don't. Because you have the memory of a goldfish with ADD.  Because celebrity devouring is all that you learnt from America. But he didn't curl up and die like the rest of them, did he? 20 yrs ago a boy of 16 was on tv and he blew your minds away. In 10-15 yrs you forgot all the mindblasting, groundbreaking and Shoaib Akhtar/Shane Warne -smashing he treated us to and tried your best to crucify him. So what does he do? He takes a break, comes back twice as old as he was when he first made you buy a TV, and sodomizes the half empty glass that's your brain.

Sachin is right now our only legitimate hero. The kind who can convince a whole generation to drop out of school and follow their dreams. A handful of such men can start the avalanche that can make a global superpower in 50 years. Believe it, coz 11 guys on June 25, 1983, heroes who toppled Vivian's Invincible Windies, had a lot to do with creating the very hero we see today. Pay it forward, as they say.

And that's why he needs to live... and die, a hero. I wish he could stay around forever, I wish he could be inspiring, uniting, indeed mesmerizing an entire nation for all eternity. But he cant, because every Federer must eventually spawn his Nadal, and every Tiger Woods will have a scantily clad skeleton in his closet. And when that happens, their mortality will be exposed for all to see. And Indians are not as delusional as Americans to worship a mortal man. No... Sachin has survived everything we threw at him... he is the hero we needed, he must now be the God we deserve. A God who by his very existence spawns a whole generation of Indian heroes, and we shall see the pride and glory of India restored. I'm not saying it will be easy, but it can be done, so just stay with me on this one last pitch.

Sachin must win the World Cup for India.
But if he plays or indeed does anything at all after this feat, he is liable to fail, to be judged.
No, Gods dont age.

Sachin must win the World Cup for India... and die in the process.

It must be the final against either Pakistan or Australia, it must be the last over with atleast 25 runs needed to win. He must hit a couple of the most amazing sixes in history with the balls shot straight out of grounds and never found again, so that the legend, and fake replicas, of the lost sach-sixer balls live on after him and are distributed as prasad in the Sachin temples we build thereafter. He must have already been retired hurt thrice and thrice returned to play, by now with internal and external bleeding. He must limp every run and yet his bat must swing faster than the eye can see. With atleast 5 or 6 runs to win The last ball must blaze a trail of fire hurtling towards him. And our deity must nod his bat to the crowd one last time, before blasting the ball into 6 pieces all of which must fly out of the stadium. The crowd must stare in astonished silence watching every piece of the ball vanish over the horizon before erupting in a cheer, 1 billion strong. And our hero, our God, our saviour must smile weakly in satisfaction and relief. The arm would move over to reveal that the impact shattered the faithful and iconic MRF bat into pieces as well, pieces on which he now stands impaled. As the entire stadium mows down barricades and rushes onto the field towards their saviour, he would stumble and fall but he must not hit the ground... as he fades away his last image must be the whole nation lifting him up above them, where he shall remain, immortalized, pristine, absolved of the past or the future, frozen immaculate.

If life were a movie, Daruwala would finally be right someday.
But its not. We cannot expect a man to sacrifice himself for us, just to be our posthumous God.
We can always hope though...

I come to mock caesar, not to praise him..!!!

Valfi season in IIT again....
for the uninitiated valfi is iitian for Valedictory Function....where we celebrate the graduation (or what should have been their ideal graduation time) of a few painu seniors and wish them the senti farewell they feel they deserve....
Honestly I dont know of any other custom that is more meaningful and profound yet as fun and lukha as this one....
I mean the endsems are like a week away and we are dwelling on prehistoric exploits of person after person for nights on end....the 4th years apparently have no interest in their last exam in iit but seemingly a lot of sophies n thirdies dont mind the endsems either...

But the valfies are more than just a party, more than just food and drink, most than even teary farewells sometimes....
For a lot of btechs their graduation is their confessional....minus the religious apparatus.you are surrounded by all those people who have been like your family for the past 3 or 4 years and a lot of acquaintances and many you have never known in your life....and yet there it is...your life, your interests, your quirks, your peeves, your despogiri everything deconstructed and documented by your closest few.... and save for a few spoilsports,in the end its all a big laugh. If you have to part i couldnt have thought of a better parting thought, than to make someone lay themselves bare and make them feel good about it.In fact just the act of letting your true feelings be known to an anonymous crowd is such a incredibly powerful experience.

Im still only a sophie....but I think....that a valfi can leave you happy to be alive, and glad to be you.Glad that even the stupidest little things you did made a lot of people laugh today....and that you will be remembered....

Dumb thing to say but i await my valfi with rabid anticipation....I only hope i make a lot of people happy....and/or some people very very happy.... :)

I had a dream last night ...!!

Picture my dream of last night and bet you would know why i like to sleep as much....

Imagine...the A-list.

She arrives in a limousine...or at least a Mercedes or Bentley...
Two BIG,REALLY BIG monsters of men guard the entrance to the Taj.If it wasn't for those 2 mountains the thronging crowd would pulverize the nervous little butler waiting anxiously. He got a big job tonight. He's assigned to run duties for MISS ---------.....(that's a secret...).

The chauffeur opens the door and out she steps. The crowd goes mad.Everyone wants to look at her....My god just look at her.
Stunning in the most unconventional way,she is not your usual bimbo or a bombshell or DD blonde.
No makeup, just a dash of kajal, No swagger, calm composure, No shiny pout, just a million dollar dimpled smile.
No plunging necklines and absent backlines, just petite well tailored formals that accentuate her curves just as well as they hide them.
No expensive jewellery,no fur,no glitter......just her....

She's not a movie star,she's not a supermodel,she's not the prime minister,she's not a pageant winner....
though in truth, if she wanted she could do more justice to every one of those roles than anyone on this planet today!!

And the crowd roars and the crowd screams as she signs a few autograph, smiles at a few people. She's waiting....
Reporters flood her with questions barely audible above the crowd's din.Even as she is answering a few of them, a sudden glint shoots furtively across her face. The twinkle in those eyes, and the glorious dimples, the lights grazing off her hair.....she smiles.A guy, dressed a trifle too rough to be a socialite, huffs and puffs in through the crowd having to literally tear through the crowd. And he reaches the impassable mountains guarding his object of desire. And she saw him too ... a flick of the hand tells the monsters to let him through .... he runs ahead and in full view of an aghast crowd takes the fairy tale princess in his arms and kisses her.

And before anyone can react the princess and her pauper have eloped on the guy's motorbike. And as if on cue, the princess lets out a whoop of joy stirring the entire page 3 crowd out of their shocked trance....This page 3 crowd just made front page!!!

That was my dream .... actually there was a diamond solitaire also in it somewhere towards the end.... ;)
And i thought and thought and thought and spent an entire day pondering over what this impossible dream could mean to me.

And you know what i figured out today ...

IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING.
